Budapest, Hungary/budapest134-med school semmelweis

Previous | Home | Next

This is an old photograph of the medical school site (at the northwest corner of Kossuth Lajos and Semmelweis), serving as such beginning in 1785. It was earlier a Jesuit cloister. The building was demolished late in the 19th century. Semmelweis runs to the right, Kossuth Lajos to the left. The “WEISS” has nothing to do with “Semmelweis”; instead, it was “Gyula Weiss,” a merchant of ladies’ wear. At this time Kossuth Lajos was called “Hatvani utca.”
